We have already explained what a dust jacket is and what it is for in our blog.
Today we are pleased to suggest a handful of tips on using a dust jacket or a wraparound band to make your book look more appealing.
Not only extra space
The primary purpose of both dust jackets and wraparound bands is very pragmatic: firstly, to protect the cover and, secondly, to provide space for a biographical note or some reviews. However, if well-designed and appealingly printed, they can make an integral part of the cover, supporting the message, adding charm, flair and successfully attracting the reader.
If you add a dust jacket or a band to just a portion of the run, e.g. only to pre-order copies, this could be a valuable bonus to the buyers.
Sometimes a band will do
Publishers often wonder how to mark out a review copy. How to honour the first readers, or the participants to the book launch event? Well, there is a simple solution. We suggest using a wraparound band with a special superscription, or even a personalised inscription, e.g. to a specific reviewer or reader. Such bands can be ordered in small runs of a few to a few dozen copies. Also importantly, it does not cost that much.
Not only printed
Wraparound bands and dust jackets can be printed on and laminated freely. But we can also cut holes of any shape in them, making the cover mysterious and the book intriguing.
This solution can be an effective lure for readers to reach for the book. The band or the dust jacket can be also so designed as to provide an alternative cover. We can produce them for very specific special occasions, e.g. with an inscription saying it is ‘the best Christmas gift of all’. Remember – imagination is the only limit!
